Super Smart Animals

I’ve enjoyed this series so far. I liked this dog in particular:

Also in this episode, during the cooperating elephants feature, there was a song that I recognised. It drove me mad trying to remember what it was. Finally something stirred in my brain: it was something to do with an Apple advertisement. Much later I realised it was from the ipad2 video. Bloody Apple, finding yet another way to drive me mad. Anyway, this is the song:

How to cook like Heston

Best cookery programme I’ve seen for a long time. A lot of celebrity chefs do food porn without being particularly useful. But in this Heston gives practical advice and scientifically explains his reasoning.

Ballets

After seeing The Nutcracker at the Hippodrome and watching Black Swan I decided to watch some ballets. Yesterday afternoon, on the hitherto untouched Sky Arts channel, I watched Swan Lake. It was beautiful and incredibly romantic. I’d never seen any version of it before. This one was Anthony Dowell’s production at the Royal Opera House.

I also watched Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Cinderella on BBC’s iPlayer which I enjoyed but it lacked the drama and romance of Swan Lake. It had more humour than drama, which was enjoyable enough. I didn’t like Prokoviev’s score which seemed discordant in comparison to Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Overall, Cinderella was entertaining but Swan Lake was breathtaking.

Threesome

Started watching Threesome after a friend mentioned it. It’s a bit silly but I like the outrageous bits like when they break their robot baby:

But the best thing about Threesome is the theme music, which is by someone called Esser, who I’d never heard of, presumably because I’m old now and don’t listen to Radio 1 anymore.

Sex and the City

Mr W couldn’t believe that I’d never watched SATC so he obtained it for me and I’ve been making my way through the seasons over the last few weeks. I’m completely hooked. I love everything about it: the fashion, the characters and the city of New York. There’s a bit of every character in me. Above all I’m very happy to be watching something where strong women and their friendships take centre stage.

Having now seen the films, I’m particularly pleased that Carrie, the main character, is child free and living a fabulous life. You just don’t see enough of that on mainstream TV.

Nigella Kitchen

I like watching Nigella on TV. I’m aware that she’s unbearably posh and her smiles are too forced and too many but there’s still something about the show that does make me more inclined to go and cook something. It could be the fantasy of having a kitchen like hers that keeps me tuning in. Last night’s episode contained some very odd recipe choices. Like Grasshopper Pie. Just looking at the recipe makes me feel a bit queasy. Then there was Spaghetti with Marmite, which as both a Marmite and pasta fan am sure is great but it’s not really what I want to my TV chefs to do. I want them to inspire me and teach me new things. I don’t want to hear about something that I’ve probably already seen in this:

Lip Service

Watched the first episode tonight. It’s like Queer As Folk but with women and not as funny. There are even Vince and Stuart equivalent characters: Cat and Frankie. It was quite cool though. I can see the similarities with This Life. I’ll keep watching to see what happens.
