Africa United

Africa United is a charming and innocent film. There is some breathtaking African scenery in it. Some of the plot is upsetting and heartrending. It made me feel ashamed for moaning and griping about minor things. Ultimately it was very uplifting. I was even more impressed when I found out about the real lives of the cast on the film’s official site.

I was about to say that I can’t think of another film I’ve seen that’s quite like it, but then I remembered Offside, which I would also highly recommend:

The Hangover & The Social Network

The Hangover is a great film to watch when you have a hangover, which tends to be the state of affairs on a Saturday daytime. I loved this film. It was so silly and just what I needed yesterday afternoon. One of the best parts was when Mike Tyson makes the guys listen to his favourite part of the song In The Air by Phil Collins:

I’ve been listening to In The Air on Spotify this morning and giggling.

EDIT (27 Nov 11): I hadn’t seen this before but In The Air has another comedy incarnation – The 2007 Cadbury advert:

Yesterday I also watched The Social Network. It was very enjoyable; it was fast paced, I had to concentrate to follow all the dialogue (a good thing) and I liked how unusually unlikeable the characters were. But the fact that Facebook was created by shallow, dysfunctional people only confirms my own negative thoughts about Facebook: I feel shallow and dysfunctional when I spend too much time on it.

Up

Saw Up at the London Waterloo IMAX today. It’s the best Pixar film I’ve ever seen. It’s colourful, quirky, funny and extremely moving. The soundtrack is wonderful too. The film touched something in me because, at a time when it feels like everyone my age is starting a family, I wonder what would happen if I ever lost the only person in my immediate family – my spouse. The message I take from Up is that, even if something devastating happens, life always has something to offer. Oh, and the talking dogs are just genius!
